When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad works. Now she feels drawn toward the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there, Umi and Sora. They were raised by dugongs and hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does. As the three children's relationship grows, strange phenomenon are frequently occurring above the Earth.
(2)【Tsugaru Lacquer Girl】 5th Aug 3:30pm & 19th Aug 12:30pm
Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. Miyako Aoki, who lives with her father, has not found anything she wants to do after graduating from a local high school. She is working at a supermarket to help her family make ends meet. Helping her father, a Tsugaru lacquerware craftsman, is the only thing she can devote herself to. However, her father, who succeeded her grandfather, a highly respected Tsugaru-nuri craftsman, loses the will to continue the business as the industry goes into decline, and the family finds itself scattered. The mother left the family because of the poor life and the selfishness of the father, and the elder brother, a hairdresser, chose to live freely instead of taking over the family business. Miyako is unable to openly declare her desire to pursue a career in Tsugaru-nuri, but as she confronts her family and the art of lacquering, she takes on a great challenge.
(3)【After the Sunset】 5th Aug 6:00pm
Set in the small town of Nagashima, Kagoshima prefecture in southern Japan. Yuichi Hino farms yellowtail fish, a family business, for his livelihood. He lives with his wife Satsuki, his mother Mie and a 7-year-old son Towa. But Towa is not their own son. He came to live with them when he was one-years old as a foster child, and now Yuichi and Satsuki want to formally adopt him. They meet Yoshida at the child consultation center as they embark on the special adoption procedures with the Family Court, and find out how Towa was taken into care. They are shocked when they learn the name of Towa’s biological mother: Akane Sato, exactly the same as that of the woman who came to the island a few years ago and has since been working at the diner. The tensions between foster parents and biological mother, the presence of residents on the island and the children growing up there are depicted in a human drama.
(4)【FATHER OF THE MILKY WAY RAILROAD】 19th Aug 6:00pm
Directed by NARUSHIMA Izuru, this powerful biopic details the life of legendary poet and novelist MIYAZAWA Kenji, one of Japan's most beloved children's authors. As the eldest son of Masajiro, a wealthy pawnbroker, Kenji was raised with the expectation that he would one day inherit the family business. However, the free-spirited Kenji is determined to walk his own path in life, and takes it upon himself to pursue agricultural studies, synthetic gemstones and other eccentric ventures, despite his father’s bewilderment. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, this incredible story depicts the power of family and unconditional love that endures through times of hardship.
