Exchange of Notes – Japan’s Grant Assistance for the Economic and Social Development Programme (ESDP) for New Chemical Fire Trucks (September 6, 2024)

2024/9/6
Japan and Samoa signed an Exchange of Notes on Friday, 6 September and Japan committed itself to providing two fire chemical trucks to Samoa under Japan’s Grant Assistance for the Economic and Social Development Programme (ESDP).

This cooperation aims to enhance the firefighting capabilities of the Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (SFESA). SFESA plays a crucial role in responding to chemical and fuel-related fires in the country, but it currently operates with only one aging, second-hand chemical fire truck. The provision of these new fire trucks will significantly strengthen SFESA’s fleet, enabling more effective and prompt responses to potential fires at fuel storage facilities and hazardous chemical incidents.

In the past, the Government of Japan has provided second-hand fire trucks through Grassroots Grant Aid, and the provision of these new vehicles is expected to further strengthen the collaboration between the two countries. This cooperation will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of the people of Samoa and will contribute to further strengthening the friendly relations between Japan and Samoa.

The Government of Japan remains committed to continuing its cooperation with Samoa and contributing to the sustainable development and security of the country.
