On 30 July 2025, a handover ceremony was held to mark the completion of the Water Supply System Improvement Project in the Satupa’itea District of Savai’i, funded by the Government of Japan under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Mr. SUZUKI Ryotaro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Samoa, Mr. Asi Taiatu Sasa Milo, President of the Independent Water Schemes Association (IWSA), as well as village representatives and members of the Satupa’itea community.

Funded through a grant of up to USD169,971 (approximately SAT457,896.01), the project was implemented in collaboration with IWSA, a local Non-Governmental Organisation. The project included replacement of 1.2km of aging pipelines, rehabilitation of the intake system, and the installation of a UV water filtration kiosk, addressing long-standing issues of water quality and supply instability in the district.

The improved water system is expected to benefit four villages, one district hospital, and two schools, directly reaching approximately 1,819 residents (including 282 households and 689 students). When including the regular users of public facilities such as the hospital and schools—patients, staff, and visitors—the total number of beneficiaries is expected to exceed 15,000, underlining the project’s wide-reaching impact not only on households but also on public health and education services.

Japan remains committed to supporting the efforts of the people and the Government of Samoa in promoting Human Security, and to further strengthening the close and warm relations between the Governments and People of Japan and Samoa.
