February 26, 2026 – The Embassy of Japan in Samoa held a signing ceremony for the Exchange of Notes concerning the provision of meteorological observation equipment to the Government of Samoa under the Economic and Social Development Programme (ESDP).

This project aims to procure and install automated meteorological weather observation systems. The Government of Japan will extend grant assistance amounting to 436 million Japanese Yen (approximately 7.8 million Samoan tala). Through this assistance, Samoa’s meteorological observation capacity at key locations nationwide will be strengthened, enabling the collection of more accurate and continuous weather data.

This cooperation is aligned with the priority areas confirmed at the Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM) and supports Samoa’s efforts in climate change response, disaster risk management, and sustainable economic and social development. It also serves to further strengthen the bonds of trust and friendship between the two countries.

Through the smooth implementation of this project, Samoa’s disaster preparedness and climate resilience are expected to be further enhanced, contributing to the safety and sustainable development of the wider region. Japan will continue to work closely with Samoa toward the realization of a resilient and sustainable society.
