The Government of Japan has provided an improved and more reliable water supply system in Aufaga Village, directly benefiting 90 households and the wider community, including the primary school.
His Excellency, Mr. SUZUKI Ryotaro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Samoa, took part in a handover ceremony of the project held earlier today (30 September), which was attended by members of the Aufaga community and representatives of the Independent Water Schemes Association (IWSA).
The project was funded through a grant of SAT 318,044.11 under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP).
In coordination with IWSA, the Aufaga Village Water Committee sought Japan’s assistance in 2024 to address critical challenges faced by the village, including limited water storage capacity, water wastage, and fluctuations in water availability, which affected the daily lives and livelihoods of its residents.
With the aim of addressing these critical issues, Japan provided assistance to support the Project Committee’s efforts to construct a new 100,000-litre water storage tank, install a security fence around the tank, and repair the water intake system.
The Government of Japan remains committed to supporting the efforts of the people and the Government of Samoa to promote Human Security and further strengthen the warm and close relations between the peoples and Governments of Japan and Samoa.
