The Government of Japan and the Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (SFESA) today formalised their partnership through the signing of the Grant Contract under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Projects (GGP) at the Faleata Fire Station, Tuanaimato.

H.E. Mr. SUZUKI Ryotaro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Samoa signed over the grant of up to USD 88,244 to Tanuvasa Oloapu Petone Mauga, Commissioner of SFESA.

The assistance will enable SFESA to procure one used rescue vehicle equipped with a crane, along with 16 types of rescue equipment, including a winch and an engine cutter that will service the Faleata Station.

The project aims to address one of SFESA’s key challenges, the shortage of reliable vehicles and specialized rescue equipment. In particular, the lack of rescue vehicles equipped with cranes and adequate extrication equipment can make it difficult to rescue people trapped in vehicles or other hazardous situations. Such limitations may delay life-saving operations and expose rescue personnel to additional risks.

The project is expected to strengthen SFESA’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to fires, traffic accidents and other emergencies while improving the working conditions and safety of rescue personnel.

Japan’s GGP programme aligns with Samoa’s National Development Strategy 2026/27-2030/31 in order to assist areas across Samoa that are in much need of improvement.

The development assistance has been ongoing for 35 years, which focuses on small scale projects that directly benefit at the grassroots level as well as contributing to the socio-economic development of Samoa.
