The Government of Japan continues to provide development assistance at grass-roots level in the education sector. Saipipi Primary School and Sasaai Primary School in Savaii celebrated the completion of the refurbished buildings funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP).
Both schools respectively hosted the handover ceremonies on 16 July 2021 that were attended by Ambassador Extraordinary of Japan to Samoa, H.E. Mr. TERASAWA Genichi, Caretaker Prime Minister, Hon. Tuilaepa Fatialofa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi, Caretaker Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Hon. Solamalemalo Loau Keneti Sio, and representatives of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture, parents, principals and staff with students.
Saipipi Primary School received a new building consisting of 8 classrooms, a staff room and library amounting to USD 129,686 (approximately WST 333,000) which has replaced their 20-year-old unsafe building. It is hoped that this Project will continue to raise the level of achievement of the school and to ensure that the students are provided with quality education and improved health sanitation.
Furthermore, Sasaai Primary School received a new school hall worth up to USD 95,669 (approximately WST 243,000) hoping that this Project can help relieve the problems constantly faced by the school with the old deteriorated hall and provide hygienic and safe education environment.
The two Projects will greatly assist the schools to offer best and equal opportunities for the children in Savaii to achieve academic excellence and improve livelihood hygienically.
The Government of Japan continues to uphold its commitment to upgrade basic educational facilities for communities across Samoa.
Japan’s GGP is specifically designed to address basic human needs, which includes water supply, healthcare and basic education.
