2019/10/24
The Government of Japan and Lepa Primary School celebrated the completion of the reconstruction project funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP).
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Samoa, H.E. Maugaoleatuolo Shinya Aoki congratulated the completion of the project at a handover ceremony held on 19 October 2019 at the School’s compound attended by the Prime Minister and President of Lepa Primary School Committee, Hon. Tuilaepa Fatialofa Lupesoliai Sailele Malielegaoi, Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Hon. Solamalemalo Loau Keneti Sio, representatives of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture, parents, teachers, students and villagers.
The School received funds of up to 133,215 USD (approximately 336,911.99 WST) for reconstruction of eight new classrooms, a staff room and library in January 2019.
Japan’s GGP was introduced in 1991 and has provided flexible and timely support that enables development projects at grass-roots level specifically designed to address basic human needs which include basic sanitation, environment, water supply and education which are listed as the highest priorities. Japan has provided funding assistance to date to 191 community projects across Samoa at an estimated value of 14 million USD, equivalent to SAT million WST.
It is hope that the Project will greatly help the School Committee, parents and teachers in its effort to promote a learning environment that optimises the ability of children of Lepa to grow and learn.
The Project reflects Japan’s goodwill and continuous friendship with the people of Samoa.
