2019/11/28

The Government of Japan continues to uphold its commitment to upgrade basic educational facilities at grass-roots level across Samoa.
Auala Primary School and its community in Savaii concluded their academic calendar for this year with the official handover ceremony of their newly constructed eight new classrooms, a staff room and a library funded by Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP).
Chargé d’Affaires ad interim Mr. KISHI Isao was present at the handover ceremony held on 22 November 2019 at the School’s compound to officially hand over the new school building, witnessed by the School Committee, villagers, parents, teachers and staff of Auala Primary School. Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Hon. Loau Solamalemalo Keneti Sio represented the Government of Samoa. The ceremony was brief and there were no students or children allowed at the venue.
Auala Primary School received a grant of 89,224 USD (229,017.17 WST) in March 2019 for a project implementation. The School’s former building was in a run-down condition and has served its community for about 45 years which triggered an everyday unsafe access for the students and staff.
Japan firmly believes that proper classrooms facilities greatly contribute to the holistic development of a child during learning process. It is for this reason, Japan has been an active development partner since the inception of its GGP in 1991 through upgrading numerous educational facilities across Samoa.
More so, a total of 98 projects in the area of education at its approximate value of 10 million USD (27 million WST) which immensely benefitted communities within the rural areas.
Japan’s GGP aims to aid self-supporting socio-economic development activities that benefit sectors such as, health, social, education and environment at the grass-roots level in Samoa.
To take this occasion, the Embassy of Japan in Apia wishes to extend its heartfelt condolences and sincere sympathy to the families who have lost their most precious loved ones in the measles epidemic. Japanese thoughts and prayers are with Samoans all at this difficult time.
