Signing Ceremonies of the Grant Contracts for the Project for Upgrade of Fagafau Samata-i-tai Primary School and the Project for Reconstruction of Moata’a Primary School (January 15, 2020)
2020/1/26

The Government of Japan continues to provide funding assistance for development of community and educational facilities across Samoa.
Fagafau Samata-i-tai Primary School and Moata’a Primary School were the first recipients in 2020 to secure funding for project implementations under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP).
The signing ceremonies to formalise this assistance were held on 15 January 2020 at the Embassy in Apia between His Excellency Mr. Genichi Terasawa, the Ambassador of Japan to Samoa and representatives of the two schools.
Fagafau Samata-i-tai Primary School received a grant of up to 92,481 USD equivalent to approximately 238,000 WST while Moata’a Primary School received a grant of up to 136,015 USD equivalent to approximately 350,000 WST.
Fagafau Samata-i-tai Primary School was founded in 1960 and its current school building was reconstructed in 2003 which has been serving the villages for the past 16 years. The school building is entirely in unsafe conditions for everyday access of students and teachers. Therefore, the Project includes major repairs to the whole building such as renovation of classrooms, repairing of the roof, replacing most of the fittings for windows and doors, re-fit library and staff room and to repaint the whole structure.
Moata’a Primary School was founded in 1952 and its current school building was in place in the 1980s which has been serving the village school for the past 40 plus years. It has survived many natural disasters and has undergone several major repair works which became more costly for the village and School Committee to maintain. The Project includes the reconstruction of 10 new classrooms, a library and staff room as well as a new toilet block in a new location.
Japan’s GGP was introduced in 1991 to respond directly to basic human needs at the grass-roots level communities. Around 190 GGP have been successfully implemented across both islands of Savaii and Upolu. The assistance epitomizes Japan’s commitment to efforts by the People and Government of Samoa to ensure human security and continue to enrich the warm and close relations between Japan and Samoa.
