Signing Ceremony of the Grant Contact for the Project for Reconstruction of Manono Uta Wharf Terminal Building (February 28, 2020)

2020/2/28
The Government of Japan provides funds of up to 95,785 USD (approximately 250,000 WST) to reconstruct a new terminal building for the Manono Uta wharf.
The signing ceremony to formalise the approved grant was held earlier on 28 February 2020 at the Embassy in Apia between Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Samoa, H.E.Mr. TERASAWA Genichi and Chairperson of Manono Island Council Committee, Leiataualesa Faaiu II and Vice-Chairperson and Member of Parliament for Aiga le Tai, Hon. Mulipola Leiataua Laki.
The grant was provided under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP).
The Manono wharf has been in operation and supporting transportation of commuters to and from Manono Island since 1800s. Its current building has been in place for the past 30 years and is posing a high risk to the commuters due to its deteriorating condition.
Therefore, the project will undertake reconstruction of a new terminal building which aims to provide adequate and safe space to accommodate the commuters.
It is expected that the completion of the project will immensely contribute to the wellbeing of the Manono Island community and many other users of the wharf.
In an effort and commitment to promote basic human needs, Japan has been an active development partner through its GGP which have provided relatively small grants to establish new and upgrade existing facilities for economic and social progress in rural development, education, health and environment since 1991.
